Hawaii Senate Resolution Supports Residential Rainwater Catchment Use Statewide

Passed March 13, 2008, Senate Concurrent Resolution (SCR) 172 requests that water boards from each of Hawaii's counties study the feasibility of launching water conservation programs based on the installation of rainwater catchment systems for non-potable use.

Rainwater catchment, which has traditionally be used in rural areas in Hawaii for domestic, agricultural needs, is now seen as a valuable sustainability solution for thirsty islands such as O'ahu and Maui, which are experiencing high growth and water shortages. The water boards are to report back to the Hawaii Senate 20 days before the legislature reconvenes for the 2009 session.

The resolution explains that we have resources here within Hawaii to make catchment usable, both through the UHM College of Tropical Agriculture & Human Resources, as well as the Hawaii Rainwater Catchment Systems (HRCS) Association.

In addition, the resolution mentions catchment use around the globe including Australia, Japan, and Texas, especially for nonpotable use such as laundry, dishwashers, flushing toilets, garden irrigation, and washing cars.
